Nature Walks with Judy

Pay Attention. Be Astonished. Tell about it. These lines from Mary Oliver are my mantra these days, and I try to capture and captivate with the beauty of the natural world.
Cicada Killer Wasp
It’s the time of year when cicadas emerge from their underground larval chambers to look for mates. It can be dangerous though. This is a Cicada Killer Wasp. Cicada killer wasps use cicadas to place in their burrows as a food source for their own larvae, who hatch out of eggs. They are not aggressive toward humans, but they have an impressive stinger to paralyze the cicada. Because the cicada is much larger than the wasp, she appears to be using both her wings and legs to drag the cicada… up a tree? Why would they do that if the burrow is in the ground? The cicada will use the height of the tree to give her the ability to fly a longer distance with such heavy prey!

The Third Eastern Screech Owlet fledges
Просмотров 42Месяц назад
Poor Pop was left in the box alone after Snap and Crackle left. While his parents called softly from nearby, he ventured out first onto the pole holding the camera, and then from the top of the box. Thunder rumbled and the rain began, and he called for help. Eventually slipping off the roof of the box, he or she made it safely into a nearby palmetto, while Dad watched from the oak.

Semipalmated Plover
Просмотров 2156 месяцев назад
The Semi-palmated plover is a small shorebird that winters here in South Carolina. On the beach, they may be tucked in with large mixed flocks of shorebirds nestled into the wrack lines on the dunes. They have a step-step-pluck rhythm of feeding, locating their prey (usually worms) by sight. See how this slight webbing in their feet looks a little like the palm of your hand? That’s how they get...

I saw one in the Everglades
Which is easier to take care of wolf or coyote?
LOL! It takes a special person to be a wildlife rehabber. I can't imagine the effort for either. Locally, you can check with the Sewee Center or Charlestowne Landing, both of which house these animals.
They grow in the north-east of Scotland too. A small wood in Kintore not far from Aberdeen has a rare population.
Why is it my yard?
probably looking for habitat... they don't do much harm...
Cool video but you didn’t say squat about “putting it up”. 🙄
Wow
Her name is Trella
Yes, he "missed the landing" that second time and a replay shows it was because she moved. Maybe she thought she had had enough.

Get it out of your yard! If you see this wicked plant destroy it! It kills hummingbird and broods of bee 🐝 hives. It is called South Carolina Jessamine or Carolina Yellow Jasmine. Sap can irritate skin. Gelsemium sempervirens. Wicked evil plant! If consumed by human will cause death.

Do they have pinchers?
They do, but they are so tiny you can almost never feel the pinch!
What kind of camera????
Sorry for the delay-- this one is a wyze security camera, so while I can see it all times (there's an owl in there now) I can't livestream.

Any certain direction should the opening of the nesting box face ?
South or Southeast or in between, no north.
@@carlosrnegronvega7363 Thank you!

mine faced south for 8 years and was completely ignored-- when I moved it to a tree facing east, they moved right in!
@@naturewalkswithjudy Thank you
Jollyville schreech owl nest is an expert considering the schreech owl boxes. A long and proven experience.
Thank you, I found one in our yard and was so confused!
I did a ton of research to find the bird that kept walking me up at 4am! These birds have no chill if you live near the woods in the south. They call at all hours. Thankfully, I think the blue jays and cardinals have chased them off for the summer. I'm sure in fall they'll be back.
I grew up in the rural Deep South and heard these birds at night. The old people would come over, sit on the darkened, screened-in porch, smoke a pipe, enjoy coffee and talk about their grandparents back in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I would just sit and listen and learn. It was back in the 1950s but I heard my grandfather tell of seeing his first automobile, first airplane, first car and even his first steam train and first electric lights.
Scooter looks thrilled
Great video!!
Thanks!
That's scary!
